Battle Hymn Of The Tiger Mother Analysis

In the book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua, Chua pushes the limits of her daughters’ happiness in order for them to be successful. Many people believe that because of this, she is risking their happiness. I, on the other hand, personally believe that Chua is raising her children without much risk. In the book, Chua tells us a story about how Lulu and Sophia made her birthday cards that were unsatisfactory and how she forced them to make better ones. She further explains, “I gave the card back to Lulu. ‘I don’t want this,’ I said. ‘I want a better one – one that you’ve put some thought and effort into. I have a special box, where I keep all my cards from you and Sophia, and this one can’t go in there’” (Chua 111). With this experience, she was teaching her children that in order to be successful, as well as making something special for someone, you must put time and effort into it. Chua taught them a lesson, but at the expense of her daughters’ pride in something she made. Some might see this as rude and uncalled for, but I see it as a good way to teach a lesson. …show more content…
Based on her Chinese parenting ways and the examples of what not to do while parenting on psychologytoday.com, some would clearly say that Chua is pushing her kids too hard in order to be successful. They say that there are “ineffective ways of communicating that lead to noncompliance and power struggles, or damage self-esteem.” Some of the “ineffective ways” that they later describe include some of the methods that Chinese parenting includes. The only problem with that is that Chinese-raised children learn how to overcome that low self-esteem and learn from what they are being put down

Chua 's confident is really strong, giving her a little more capability to deal with the weaknesses of their children. The way parents raise their children is reflected in the things parents can offered to their children. Calling somebody a good or bad parent would not be fair enough, but calling a successful parent would a most accurate way to reflect how parents rise their children. To make a child strong enough to survive in their environment and succeed in their society being influenced by a culture, to give children confidence to stand out from others, and giving a child a guide to start building a future to achieve their goals, makes a parent to be a successful parent. In “The Lady, or the Tiger”, the author’s use of conflict between the princess and herself shows that she actually loved him, and would not send her love to the death. In this quote we learn that the princess knows a key detail that the man does not, “ She knew in which of the two rooms, that lay behind those doors, stood the cage of the tiger, with its open front, and in which waited the lady.” The princess took the initiative to find out what was behind the door. If ‘fate’ was to decide, which they believed it did, she would have let him open the door with the tiger because he was guilty of the accused ‘crime’. However, she took the initiative to find out which of the doors held either to change his fate.…

I agree that rationality and gentleness are the keys to raising a good child. In the case of Shila, she was not rational and she was too gentle. Shila thought it was rational to give half of her salary to charity and donate a large portion of her clothes. While it is proper to donate to charity, the amount of money and clothing that Shila was donating was irrational because she was limiting the amount of items and money she had for herself. While being gentle is a great quality to have when it comes to dealing with others, as exemplified with Shila, if it is done too much it can cause great harm.…

In Amy Chua's article “Why Chinese Mother's Are Superior,” she explained how strict and forceful she is with her daughters. Her children are not allowed to have sleepovers, she expects them to receive only A's in school, and they must learn piano and violin, and practice for hours every day. While I am not justifying her behavior, her children seem to truly love her, and will probably excel in life. However, children also need to learn to trust their parents,…
