The Battle at Sayler’s Creek was considered by many to be one of the most ferocious and merciless battles ever fought on US soil. Many witnesses swore that they’d never seen a more desperate fight, with so much suffering, than at Sayler’s Creek. The battle was so fierce that, once the men ran out of ammunition, the fight turned hand to hand.Since the Confederates were so low on supplies, many wore Union soldiers’ overcoats, even being warned against it. Which lead to them being mistaken as Union soldiers during the Battle at Sayler’s Creek, and mistakenly being killed by their fellow brothers in arms. The Confederates lost many people in this battle. The effects of theses tragedies left Lee’s army feelings totally hopeless about their situation. Even Lee, although still trying to find a way to win, was devastated by the numerous losses. He still held some hope that he could find a way to win, but even he said, that if there were a few more battles like Sayler’s Creek, the whole war would come to an end.
