In his article entitled The Place of Wife Battering in Considering Divorce, Gary Liaboe makes the case that abuse is even more damaging to a marriage relationship than adultery.

This is true. In the end, the only true judge for whether a divorce is not sinful is Jesus. Those who seek to terminate their marriage will do so with full knowledge that a marriage is a sacred covenant ordained and maintained by God and to break it without just cause will bring judgement. However, a more open view of divorce and remarriage exceptions can bring freedom from guilt to many women and children who are currently held in bondage for fear of a vengeful and angry God. God does not desire that we should suffer, but that we are free from oppression. Many churches in America today condemn women who divorce their husbands for any reason, but specifically for abuse. This is absolutely unacceptable. These arguments are meant to deter that sort of judge mental and legalistic behavior, allowing for victims of abuse to come forward without shame.
