In order to save the "dying" city of Gotham from the criminal underworld, poverty, and corruption within the police department, Bruce returns to the root of all his misery as a changed man; the identity of Batman was established to prevent anyone else from experiencing the pain and suffering he had endured as a child while the normal Bruce Wayne returns to his "throne" at Wayne Enterprises in order to gain the funding needed for new technology such as the bat-mobile and upgrading the suit as well as using his influence to support individuals such as Harvey Dent who had gained the title of the "White Knight" due to being able to achieve justice during the day without a mask. Despite his vigilantly approach towards establishing law and order, Batman is able to maintain his sanity by acknowledging a specific honor code that prevents him from using deadly force or resorting to killing criminals such as the Joker despite his ruthless and unpredictable nature to harm others for his own enjoyment. What makes Batman an ideal hero is his heart and courage because he refuses to be thanked or acknowledged for his role in justice. As a result, Bruce Wayne actually tries to distant himself from the caped crusader by essentially hiding in pain site and acting like the cocky "Billionaire Playboy" who…

The Sirens VS. Poison Ivy: Bet Your Guess If you don’t commit crimes, kill, or back stab people (I mean not figuratively and figuratively) are you a villain? A villain is a a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime. Batman has been seen as a role model by people of all ages, especially when he succeeds in fighting his most elusive enemies through impressive combat skills and admirable gadgets. Batman is one of the most popular superheroes to this day, but just because he is well-known does not mean he is without faults; his imperfections make him more relatable and perfect, in a sense. In Marc DiPaolo’s book, “War, Politics, and Superheroes,” he elaborates on several controversial issues surrounding Batman in his first chapter, “Batman as Terrorist, Technocrat, and Feudal Lord,” such as his rocky relationship with women, the usage of Batman as a propaganda piece, his motives to save the city Batman has claimed as his own, and his personal life as Bruce Wayne. Batman is portrayed on the…

By basic definition, a villain is a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime; scoundrel. Two people that have the personality and have earned the title of being a villain are The Sirens, from Homer’s book the Odyssey and Queen Levana, from Marissa Meyer's book Cinder. While the Sirens are excellent villains, it is clear that Queen Levana is the best villain out of those two villains. It is true that the Sirens are a villain because they are evil, smart, and vengeful, they do these things just to survive and get food to eat.…

We often focus more on the protagonist of stories, but what about the antagonist? Reading all three of the short stories Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates, A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, they all expand the idea of the “bad guy.” The antagonists are the ones that truly develop the situation of stories, because without them there wouldn't be a conflict, or a story in general... At least not an interesting one to say the most.…

The villain in many works of literature can be as complex as the hero himself; however, this villain that the hero has to fight is not necessarily the only villain that our hero has to worry about. Living inside the hero, the villain is as undeniable and as powerful as it is in the monstrous creatures that are to be fought in a more physical or present way. The true villain in many hero novels is the struggle within the hero himself. This villain is like any other; entering when least expected and being fed by outside sources. The fact remains: they are as deadly as the monsters that attack in the night.…

Villains are an interesting bunch in that the same person can be seen as both minor/major, or helpful/dangerous. I guess the same could be said about heroes though. Chuck Klosterman, a best selling author, wrote an essay titled “Electric Funeral,” a chapter of I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined), which details villains of today-different types of technocrats. The three “villains” he mainly focuses on are Perez Hilton, Kim Dotcom, and Julian Assange, who each vary greatly on the spectrum of their acts. Hilton is a blogger who likes to post photoshopped pictures and articles, Dotcom created Megaupload, a website to post copyrighted material illegally, and Assange is the head creator of WikiLeaks.…

“Fair is foul, and foul is fair.” A Shakespearian enthusiast might recognize this paradoxical quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, but for many its meaning remains puzzling. How can any sane person claim good is bad, and bad is good? But before writing Shakespeare off as a lunatic, one must take this quote in the context of the story. In Macbeth this quote gives a foreshadowing of the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.…

When we think of Batman, the words “hope”, “justice”, and “incorruptibility” come to mind. He is The Dark Knight, a bat vigilante who fights to keep the fictional streets of Gotham safe. He is arguably one of the greatest superheroes ever created. He fights crime and faces some of the most insane villains in comic book history. What makes him stand out from the rest is that, as Wikipedia states, “unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers; rather, he relies on his genius intellect, physical prowess, martial arts abilities, detective skills, science and technology, vast wealth, intimidation, and indomitable will.”…
