A hero acts within the law, and a vigilante acts outside the law to stop criminals. A great example of a hero would be a police officer, and a vigilante would be someone like, DC’s comic book character Batman. The difference between the two is defined by their actions. A police officer arrest criminals and puts them in jail, whereas Batman uses violent force, and has no legal authority to apprehend criminals. Vigilantes are mostly fictional characters made up in novels, movies, or comic books. Vigilantes appeal to the readers by their unlawful acts lead to some form of justice.

Raziel Wraith sums up The Punisher in an article for “Comic Vine” website, “After his family was killed by the mob, US Marine Special Forces veteran Frank Castle became a one-man army in his war against organized crime” (Wraith 1.) The Punisher wants revenge for what happened to his family, but also does not want what happened to him happen to any other family. In his actions of killing criminals The Punisher is eliminating some of the biggest threats to society.
