Welcome campers back to The Science of Superpowers! Today, we look to rebuild Gotham City. The hometown of Batman, the city has been ransacked by the various villains and needs to be reconstructed. Can Gotham pass the three design challenges as you work together to rebuild Batman’s most prized possession? As you make your way through the lesson, add to the conversation by either reading directly from the Background Information or by ad-libbing in your own words.
Just outside of Gotham in Wayne Manor, lives Bruce Wayne, otherwise known as Batman. Over the years, he’s gone up against some heavy hitters, and Gotham City has taken the brunt of their fights. It’s grown, been destroyed and rebuilt …show more content…

STURDY SKYSCRAPERS (small groups)
The Wayne Tower is the tallest building in Gotham city, standing 1,000 feet tall. In the past, there have been earthquakes in the area that have toppled over many buildings. Bruce Wayne has hired you and your team to construct a new skyscraper in the center of town, one that is both tall and can withstand the force of earthquakes. Work with your team to design and build a skyscraper that can withstand earthquakes. Build the skyscraper on a table.
For this challenge, each group builds the tallest skyscraper they can to withstand an earthquake. Give campers up to fifteen minutes to design and build their skyscraper. Once all of the skyscrapers are completed, measure each skyscraper with a ruler or by sight. Have the students help decide which skyscraper is the tallest and which is the shortest. To test sturdiness, simulate an earthquake by gently shaking each table for three seconds. If any buildings remain standing, shake each table again for 3 seconds. The tallest building that remains standing wins the
