Bat Guano Caves The best cave for the students to visit is the Lava River Cave. This is based on the diversity of the bats in the area, the accessibility of the cave and area, and the effect that white nose syndrome, or white nose syndrome, has had on the species of bats that live in the area. This cave in Coconino National Forest is close to the Northern Arizona University, and is by far the best choice for a class studying bats and white nose syndrome of the options given, which are the chosen cave (Lava River Cave), Antelope Cave, Bat Cave Mine, and Grand Canyon Caverns. Lava River Cave is very diverse compared to the other caverns. It has 2 confirmed species, the big brown bat, and the yuma myotis, but it also has a very large list of possible bats of 10. Grand Canyon Caverns has 2 confirmed and 6 possible, Bat Cave Mine has 2 and 7, and Antelope Cave has 2 and 14. This means that Antelope Cave and Lava River Cave have the most species in them most likely. The effect that is caused by having more bat species in the area is that the students have a larger selection of bat guano to study. Lava River Cave is structured like a tourist attraction, as in it is walk in and walk out without any special permits, or restrictions. This means that it can function properly as a research area for a group of scientists. The other caves are either tricky to gain access to, only viewable through guided tours, or somewhat barred to the public making them not as viable options.
