“Bastard out of Carolina,” a story written by Dorothy Allison, takes place in Greenville County, South Carolina. The Story is told in first person from Ruth Anne or more commonly known as Bone. The story starts out with a car accident where Bones mother Anney flies out the car through the front window. She is taken to the hospital and has Bone while she is unconcious. Since Anney is unconcious her sister Ruth and her mother have to fill out Bone’s paperwork. They have it all filled out correctly until they get to the father part and fail to give the same name. This place Bone as a Bastard in the state of Carolina.
Shortly after home from the hospital Anney goes to the courthouse to fix Bone’s birth certificate, but they tell her she can’t change it. Eventually Anney starts dating a guy named Lyle Parson who she would

Anney makes Bones take them back and apologize where she is later banned for a year. At this time Glen is going through a time where he has abusive outburst. Later Glen catches Bone running through the house and takes her into the bathroom and beats her with his belt. After this moment Glen finds any little thing that he can the hurt Bone.One day he goes to far that Anney has to bring her into the hospital to get checked out. The doctors realize that she has had her collarbone broken twice and her coccyx had been broken. This opens up Anney’s eyes that she needs to get away from her abusive husband. After a while Glen comes to Anney and asks for her forgiveness. He apologizes to the girls and starts to live with them once again. Anney can tell that having Glen back around disturbs Bone, so she sends her off to live with her Aunt Ruth. Her Aunt was sick so her mother told her that she was going over there so that she could help her. While living at her aunt’s house Bone falls in love with gospel music.
