Basketball Vs. Dr. Naismith: The Sport Of Basketball

Improved Essays
The game of basketball was invented in 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Basketball was created by a physical education teacher, James Naismith. The game was created as a safer game to play with his class of eighteen students. Throughout the years the game of basketball has changed little by little.
There are many differences to the way basketball was played then and now, but there are also many similarities. For example, basketball was originally played with nine players on each team, to fit the size of Dr. Naismith’s class, now in a regulation basketball game, there are five players on each team. The original basket for the game was a peach basket attached to the wall, now we have a steel and aluminum hoop with netting attached so the

Naismith had created thirteen rules, which are very similar to the rules today. Many of the rules are almost exactly the same, but with little changes or additions. For example, rule number one is the rule that the ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. That rule is still current today except, once the ball passes the midcourt line, it cannot be passed back behind the midcourt line. Rule number two states that the ball can be batted in any direction, but never with a fist. This rule is also still current today, but the ball cannot be kicked either. The third rule is the rule of traveling or carrying, players cannot run with the ball, the ball must be thrown from the place it was caught. In the original game, an allowance was made if the player was running and made an effort to top, but in today's game, there is no allowance. The fourth rule is that the ball must be held with hands, no using arms or the body to help hold the ball. That rule still occurs today, breaking this rule will result in a traveling violation. The fifth rule is no shouldering, pushing, striking, holding, or tripping in any way. This rule still occurs today, but with different penalties. The sixth rule is that a foul is striking the ball with a fist, or a violation of rule 3 and 4. This rule is still current today, he ball cannot be struck with a fist or kicked. The seventh rule is that if either team makes three fouls in a row, it counts as a …show more content…
Since the original basket had a bottom, the ball had to stay in the basket for the goal to count. Now the ball has to go through the basket to get a goal. The defensive basket interference and offensive goaltending rules still occur. The FIBA rules allow touching the ball by either team after it touches the rim. The ninth original rule was that when the ball goes out of bounds, it gets thrown back in and played by the first person to touch it. That is still the rule today, it is called a throw-in. Rule ten is the job of the umpire. The umpire was in charge of monitoring fouls, notifying the referee when three consecutive fouls were made, and the umpire could disqualify players according to fouls. Today the umpire has been replaced by two or

Basketball is a game that originated from Springfield, Massachusetts, when a group of eighteen men began it in a YMCA gymnasium. Since then, it has evolved into a modern game of interest, with more than 300 million people playing worldwide. Dr. James Naismith, who created the instant successful sport, intended for the game to employ player skills to excel. The game was first played with a soccer ball thrown into a peach basket, creating the term "basketball." The very first basketball courts were merely half the size of today's courts.…

When basketball first started, the use of peach baskets would cause a stoppage of the game every time someone scored because the ball would be stuck in the basket (Kloppenburg, et al. 2013). This slowed down the pace of the game. At first, someone with a ladder had to fetch the ball from the basket until eventually the bottoms were removed from the baskets. In 1893, after several attempts to alter or replace the basket, cast iron rims replaced these baskets (Kloppenburg, et al. 2013). This was a major milestone for basketball since the free falling ball after a made basket dramatically increased tempo and scoring of the game.…

Later in 1954, a 24 second shot clock was introduced into the NBA (Evolution). If a team did not shoot the ball within 24 seconds, the ball would be turned over to the opponent. This rule was huge, college basketball was much more popular at the time compared to the NBA. This was because the NBA game was slow, with a bunch of stalling. But, this rule stops teams from having the ability to stall for a long period…

Out of bounds which are also called boundary lines are the big rectangle surrounding the court. Going out of bounds will be a turnover which means the other team gets the ball. There is the paint where the power forward and center are positioned. The free throw line is inside the three-point line and is only used when fouled, and the only basket worth one point each. The three-point line is the semi-circle surrounding the basket and if shot behind this line is worth three points, also that is where the point guard, shooting guard, and small forward usually play.…

During the soccer unit I made many calls including: offsides, out of bounds, hand ball, pushing, and goal. The call that occurred most often was out of bounds, which happened about 5 times throughout my refereeing experience. Out of bounds was the easiest call to make because you can see it happen from many directions, and it is not really a judgement call. The hardest call to make was the offsides penalty. This was the hardest because I was unfamiliar with the rule.…

Ball physics is there in the game. The ball go through defenders while passing and dribbling, which is known for the yo-yo dribble. Players cannot detect the ball when the ball is right in front of the them. When I was talking about the CPU being too dominant in the game, ball physics help them being more dominant. For example, when a loose ball is on the floor and your player is reaching for, the CPU can glance at the ball at last possible second and retrieve the ball before you.…
