Naismith had created thirteen rules, which are very similar to the rules today. Many of the rules are almost exactly the same, but with little changes or additions. For example, rule number one is the rule that the ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. That rule is still current today except, once the ball passes the midcourt line, it cannot be passed back behind the midcourt line. Rule number two states that the ball can be batted in any direction, but never with a fist. This rule is also still current today, but the ball cannot be kicked either. The third rule is the rule of traveling or carrying, players cannot run with the ball, the ball must be thrown from the place it was caught. In the original game, an allowance was made if the player was running and made an effort to top, but in today's game, there is no allowance. The fourth rule is that the ball must be held with hands, no using arms or the body to help hold the ball. That rule still occurs today, breaking this rule will result in a traveling violation. The fifth rule is no shouldering, pushing, striking, holding, or tripping in any way. This rule still occurs today, but with different penalties.
