After reading an article by Sid Kirchheimer called “Are Sports Fans Happier?” Instantly answering the question before even reading… how in the world could they be?! Me being a person who cannot sit still and watch a sport simply because sitting still and watching others be active is not something I can do. Being completely understandable a team you are watching has a family member on it and feeling excitement for the player on the team for getting their victory but, feeling “bona fide joy” as Kirchheimer says in the article that this is real joy the fans feel when the team they are watching wins.…

Last Wednesday, I was lucky enough to attend a Rangers vs. Penguins hockey game at the renowned Madison Square Garden. Jerseys, hats, and merchandise filled the arena in a sea of blue, as fans poured into the arena. As my beloved Rangers started to fall behind to the Penguins, (in an eventual 6-1 drubbing) I started to exercise my sociological imagination, wondering how these disparate 18,000+ individuals came together to witness a mundane hockey game, and in essence create a social structure like no other. The first sociological term that sprung to mind when pondering this mystery of sports fans is the idea of a subculture present between fans of similar teams. A subculture is defined as a distinguishable group that shares a number of features with the dominant culture within which it exists while also having unique features such as language, customs, or values.…

    Home Field Advantages

The two authors in the book spend an entire chapter attempting to debunk the four most conventional theories that people assumed for ages have played the biggest factor in creating the mystique of home-field advantage. By looking at individual settings over the course of a game that pit players up against the home crowd, such as free throws in the NBA or penalty shots in hockey, the statistics concluded that the crowd did not make it that much harder for players to cash in on their opportunities. For example, the authors cite the following statistical evidence from the NBA to help make their point: “Over the last two decades in the NBA, including more than 23,000 games, the free throw percentage of the visiting teams is 75.9 percent and that of the home team is... 75.9 percent - identical even to the right decimal point” (118). They would go on to state that factors like travel, difficulty of schedule, and the ability to take advantage of home stadium characteristics, are all irrelevant to home teams winning more times than not.…
