Basketball Experience Analysis

Basketball was not a part of my life until I was 14. My first experience was not playing a court, but playing with NBA Live. The strategy and dynamics behind the game was captivating, and this inspired me to play with a real ball and real players. I first began playing street basketball with my friends in freshman year. The basics of dribbling, shooting, and passing were difficult for me, especially playing with others that had multiple years of experience. On the other hand, aspects of basketball that came naturally were off ball skills. Defending on the perimeter requires quick lateral movements with short steps while staying low, and I learned this quickly as I played tennis for multiple years. The foot movement and balance required between …show more content…
I was one of the least impactful team members given my insignificant skill set. During the middle of the season, the team lost three games in row, and the captain called every member to a meeting to air out any conflict within the team. I brought up that I did not know feel like I had a place on this team, as I only placed during garbage time or only a handful of possessions during close games when one of the key members needed rest. One of the warmest gestures that have been given to me, were the words from each of my teammates about how they valued me on the team. Even if my skills were not up to par, they said they enjoyed my presence during team bonding sessions, on the bench, and during practice. I continued playing as a sophomore on junior varsity, while still warming the bench. I did not play during junior year because I wanted to focus on my tennis and academics. Finally, during my senior I decided I wanted to be involved in basketball again. I approached the varsity coach about the team manager position. I taped the varsity team games for review, and recorded the box score. Several of my favorite memories involve basketball. My experiences of playing NBA Live, not only inspired me to play basketball, but also led me to watch NBA on the television. To this day, I still watch the NBA and I am an avid Lakers fan. I am excited to witness were their current young core will take them in the future. I favorite NBA player,

BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL Basketball is a sport in which you need a lot fundamental’s. You do not have to be the greatest you just need some kind of knowledge of the game. Football on the other hand you just need to be bigger than a bull and faster than a rabbit and jump higher than a kangaroo in my perspective. Do not get me wrong football is a great sport and it is very exciting, but basketball you need height in most cases as to say you wanted to play the center or power forward position, in football you can be the shortest person and ever and as long as you can run at least a 4.5 you’re the best person in the league.…

However, although I had never anticipated there would be a problem with my talent levels, considering I had played freshman and sophomore year, I did not make the roster. I was devastated. Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

Basketball has taught me a simple thing like how to be a good sport. Not only was basketball teaching me how to act after a game, but teaching me life lessons. I believe that life isn’t fair, and I soon learned that when the referees in the game were making horrible calls. It seemed that all the calls were never going our way and the referee never made the correct call. These kinds of games would happen a lot, so I learned just to move on.…

I still had aspirations of playing at a higher level, but my confidence was completely shaken when I did not make varsity basketball as a freshman. There were four freshman who had been invited to play fall ball with the varsity team from the year before and I was the only one who did not make varsity. I was pulled aside by the coach who told me he just felt I needed a little bit more time to develop. I was furious and I wanted to prove him wrong. After the first scrimmage of the season about a week after I learned I was on JV, the coach called me to the front of the bus on the way home and told me that I would now be practicing with varsity on Sunday’s as well as Saturday’s with the JV team.…
