For the rest of the day I was just silent and mentally torn. At lunch two of my friends that made the basketball team were happy as they could be while I was crushed. That night I felt like crying for the first time in a while and said to myself “Forget basketball it’s dumb” but really I didn’t mean it. Tryouts were coming up and this time I knew I would make the team because in the summer our JV team won a championship. Finally all my hard work paid off when I saw my name on the list. My face turned red like an apple as I began to laugh and smile. The season would begin soon and I had to learn how to play organized basketball. The thing that really helped me to learn quickly was my ability to pay attention and adapt quick. My coach always said “The things that you do in the classroom will transfer on to the court”. After hearing him say that I finally realized that education and basketball were exactly the same. After practicing hard and learning the “game of basketball” I got moved up to varsity two games into the season. This was a complete shock to me because a year before I was in the stands watching the games now I was playing them. Things would not get easier though as I thought to myself. This was varsity basketball with seniors and juniors, this was the real deal!! With watching the plays every day in practice, I would do my best to memorize the plays. My drive increased when I would use my free time at home using pennies to learn the plays and imaging me running them over and over again. After picking up on the plays, my knowledge on the varsity level increased to a point where I was able to play them with the upperclassmen. With the increase of my knowledge on and off the court, I was able to maintain a 3.0 GPA and earn a starting role my junior year on the

I walked into Neil Armstrong Middle School's gym, nervous as can be, not ready for basketball tryouts. The only reason I was there was because my dad and sister wanted me to play. I also wanted to play a sport this year, but I didn't think it would be basketball. It was so loud it sounded like someone was yelling in my ear and playing music at the same time. We started doing lay-up drills, I missed so many compared to the other girls.…

Heartbreak and hours of crying–that was the aftermath of finding out I didn’t make the travel basketball team in the fifth grade. I started playing recreational basketball for Montville in the third grade; since then, I had dominated the competition as I hit my growth spurt earlier than most of my friends. Not only was I taller than most of the kids I played with, but I was also faster and stronger. Coming into the tryout, I was confident in my abilities and believed that I would make the team. Upon finding out the results of the tryouts, I was devastated and felt cheated because I thought I was better than some of the kids that made the team.…

All the times I missed notes, missed baskets, or didn’t hit the ball over the net. More importantly I thought about my intentionality and purpose during those moments I realized that all of the little lessons I learned while participating in all of these activities would add up and lead to greater opportunities. Opportunities to improve, to learn, to grow, but more importantly to become a better person.…

What I knew at the time was how to love the game. Going into the season I had heard negative things about the coach from players who were still on the team as well as from the ones who had quit. Naively, I disregarded what they said since I only cared that I finally had the opportunity to play high school basketball. I remember walking into the gym on the first day of tryouts hoping to make varsity. Surrounded by friends it would be nothing but exciting and fun – little did I know.…
