Basketball Captain Research Paper

Decent Essays
My junior year I was selected as a captain for the girls varsity basketball team. It was an honor to be selected especially because I am not always looked at as a typical leader because of my quiet nature. Throughout the season I learned that being a leader is not always easy. Of course while winning or having an easy practice, anyone could be a leader, but it is the truly grueling days when people look to their leaders most for support. Since I am not the most outspoken person in the world I had to find different ways to lead the team through these tough times. For example, I put my main focus on leading by example, trying my hardest each day, and doing whatever coach said I needed to do in order to make the team better. As the season went on, however, I became more comfortable leading the team in a slightly more vocal way. Although I was still never one to yell, I feel that I got my message through to the girls. During my time as captain I learned that you do not have to be loud to be a leader, since different people respond to different things anyways. Due to the fact that I have always been quiet, I have always been a little nervous about my ability to successfully communicate with people, and since I am planning on becoming a physician's assistant this worry has become more prevalent in the past years.

To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

Having the time of refuge on a basketball court brings chills down my spine and tingling in my fingers, eager awaiting the next time I have a basketball in my hands. Playing basketball relieves the mind when shooting around, dribbling the ball constantly, and dedicating time to the sport. Shooting around relieved the stress I was feeling, I would walk into the gym with my headphones in my ear, blasting insane pump up music to get me in the mood to start my hooping session and bumping my music, nodding my head to the beat. I could smell the freshly waxed wooden floors and the light fixtures up above shining bright illuminate light down on me as if I was in the spotlight in a grand theatre.…

I approach leadership maybe a little backwards. I'm a firm believer in you have to be an example first, and then your character and humility will influence those around you. In the classroom I have always taken my responsibilities very serious and this example has defiantly influenced others to do the same. I have been on the varsity soccer team at Three Rivers High School since my freshman year. I been fortunate to a starter with non-stop play time.…

For many high school athletes, the role of sports has been to help them advance to college, or aspire to become a professional athlete. However, the role of sports in my life derived from my desire of being a part of a team, and having an escape from any stressful issues. Being a member of a team sport easily allows for close friendships to form. From being around each other multiple hours every day, working together in practices and games, and bus rides to events, it allowed for bonds to be formed. This year serving as a captain for both the soccer and swim teams, it really enforced more of a connection between my teammates and I. As captain, I wanted to make sure that everyone was performing to the best of their ability, while also enjoying…

My activities required participation on both ends, so it was not always me leading but also me trying to get them to share and talk.
