ABSTRACT: This research aims to discover the psychological effects of colors used in celebrating Basant Panchami. Basant Panchami is a popular Hindu festival dedicated to goddess Saraswati, who is the divinity of knowledge, art and music. This day falls on the fifth day of the Hindu month of Magh, which is also the first day of spring. Goddess Saraswari is generally shown seated on a white lotus, wearing a colorful silk sari with base of white color and holding a book in her lower left hand. Goddess Saraswati denotes serenity and calmness. Her ride is a white swan which is known for its peculiar capability of separating water from the milk. The eyes of the goddess are full of compassion. Yellow color is given special importance on this day. On Basant Panchami, Saraswati is dressed in yellow garments and worshipped (with Puja, Havan etc.). The mustard fields in North region of the country blossoms during this season and giving a yellow coat to nature. People dress in yellow clothes, offer yellow flowers to Goddess Saraswati and put a yellow turmeric tilak on their forehead. They give a visit to temples and offer prayers to different gods. New garments are purchased for this festival and many delightful dishes prepared for this particular festival. Yellow also stands for wealth and affection. Yellow color is also associated with knowledge and learning. Idols of different gods and goddesses in home and temples are ornamented with yellow colored clothes and jewelry.
