Basal metabolism is the minimum amount of energy expenditure required per unit of time that is necessary to conduct involuntary bodily functions such as respiration, blood circulation, muscle tone, maintain body temperature, and ultimately maintain life. The human body requires energy to sustain proper body fluids and nutrients that preserve life and health. An individual’s basal metabolism can be determined by finding their basal metabolic rate. According to Respiratory Care Calculations by David W. Chang, the basal metabolic rate is used to calculate daily caloric needs based on a person’s activity level (Chang 314). Every chemical reaction that occurs in the body must be complemented by the absorption of energy or the discharge of energy. Anabolic reactions are endergonic and consume energy, they involve small molecules building up to make large molecules. Anabolic reactions are fueled by energy stored in ATP. Essential anabolic processes in the body require the use of nutrients found in the diet to synthesize complex molecules to build and maintain structural materials in the body such as the skeleton, cell membranes, and connective tissue. Another type of process involved in maintaining basal metabolism is catabolism, which is chemical reactions that break complex molecules down into smaller molecules in order to release energy. Catabolic reactions are exergonic. An example of a catabolic reaction occurring in our body is the conversion of glucose throughout respiration to yield carbon dioxide and water. In order to maintain the body’s basal metabolism during a period of caloric deficit the body will pull energy predominantly from liver carbohydrate glycogen stores. If an individual is unaware of their basal metabolic rate they could be deficient in caloric consumption which could lead to other serious health problems. Even when fast asleep or laying still the human body is hard at work and the energy used in basal metabolism is responsible for this. Being aware of your basal metabolic rate in comparison to your health and fitness goals can help to accomplish them. Understanding basal metabolism can help to lose or gain weight in a healthy effective manner.
