The Bartebys of the Classroom
The Bartlebys of the education system are students who “prefer not to” do their work. I have never understood why someone would come to class and do nothing and expect a good grade. I would assume the student wants to be successful and pass the class they have chosen to take. This can be an issue for composition teachers or teachers in general. The author in the reading nails it on the head when describing the characteristics of a Bartleby student. There are different types of Bartleby students that can be considered lazy, incurious, and a conscientious objector type of student. Out of the types described the one I have seen the most in college courses is “the incurious student (Barnes 2)”. Which translates to the student thinks they are smarter than the teacher and believes it is a waste of time to provide the effort to complete or start the work assigned. There has to be a way to reach a student of this caliber. This problem can bother a teacher relentlessly, especially a composition teacher because of the fact that they are perfectionists. An example of this is like having a problem that you cannot solve and you are determined to solve it, until it has driven you crazy by not finding a solution. There are factors that can influence this type of behavior in a classroom. As teachers run into this challenge, they need to be determined in trying to solve the issue with these types of students. A teacher needs not to be too quick to judge a student as a Bartleby student because there can be some underlying factors not known. Just because a student starts out as being considered this type of person, it does not mean they will stay that
