II. Barriers-There are barriers that can get in the way of effective listening between parents and their children especially teenagers. We are going to highlight the barriers of attention span, active listening, and distractions.
A. Attention Span
1. Comic- We are going to act out a comic shows the difference in speech when you have someone’s attention and situation when you don’t have their situation.
2. Problems- The child came to a different conclusion when the parent was listening versus the parent not listening.
3. Activity- We are going to test our participant’s attention span, by having them listen to a boring paragraph.

Video Clip- We are going to show a clip of Louis from Family Guy not listening to her son, Stewie, because of her physical distraction of drowsiness.
2. Solution- We have provided tips can help parents and teens discipline themselves, so they are less distracted to improve listening.
III. Key Jar Activity-The Key Jar Activity will help parents learn about their children and teens by listening to their responses to the question prompts from the jar. This listening activity will help improve conversation quality, turn taking when speaking, and family communication.
IV. Alternative to punishments- We are going to discuss ways to discipline your child through talking in a way they will listen without having to punish them.
A. Steps of Alternative Punishments-The seven steps are point out a way to be helpful, express strong disapproval (without attacking character), state your expectations, show the child how to make amends, given a choice, take action, and allow child to experience consequences of misbehavior.

Problem Solving-As a group we will act out the comic about problem solving as a visual example of how to deal with this situation.
VII. Types of Parenting-Each member individually will take turns discussing each of the 7 parenting types while two additional members will demonstrate each parenting type.
A. Authoritarian-This parenting style sets strict rules, relies on punishments, and has little communication with their child.
B. Authoritative-This parenting style has rules, but acknowledges exceptions to the rules. This parenting style may use a reward system.
C. Neglectful-These parents expect children to raise themselves.
D. Permissive-These parents lack a set of rules and try to be a friend not a parent.
E. Helicopter Parents-This parenting style prevents their children from being ready for the real world by coming to the rescue for every problem.
F. Drill Sergeant Parenting-This style controls their children which could prevent them from building decision making skills
G. Consultant Parenting-These parents ask questions and offer choices.
