Loneliness is triggered by spending excessive amounts browsing online, experiencing a sense of isolation when other ‘connected’ friends are posting photographs from enjoyable events, which you haven’t attended. Being confronted with an abundance of people’s lives going on without you can cause dissatisfaction towards your own and create a sense of loneliness and isolation. Browsing other people’s profiles, opposed to uploading your own personal content is more likely to make users have increasing feelings of envy and jealousy, resulting in a piercing, sharp sadness of loneliness.
