When someone thinks of a bookstore, most people will say Barnes & Nobles. Barnes & Noble continues to lead in book sales even after 20 years. Although in recent years, Barnes & Noble is declining, because of their greater, more established competition, Amazon and Apple. When it comes to Amazon, Barnes & Noble is always slightly behind them. Amazon released their website 2 years before Barnes & Noble was able to release theirs. Amazon released their e-book, the Kindle, 2 years before Barnes & Noble released the Nook. Barnes & Noble was able to drop their prices and release a cheaper Wi-fi model, but Amazon retaliated by slashing their prices and releasing their Wi-fi model cheaper than Barnes & Noble’s. Barnes & Noble is trying their absolute best to stay in the competition with Amazon and Apple, but they always seem to fall short. When looking at Porter’s Competitive Forces Model, when you look at Barnes & Noble compared to other small bookstores, Barnes & Noble is thriving, in fact Barnes & Noble has drove most bookstores out of business. Although, when looking at the bigger picture, Barnes & Noble is failing when they are faced with a bigger and more competitive market, they are in competition with other e-book suppliers like Amazon and Apple. The need for actual books has deteriorated, while the e-books are becoming more favored and trendy. Amazon released their own e-book device, the Kindle, so in order to keep up with competition Barnes & Noble release their own device, the Nook, 2 years after the release of the Kindle.
