Barnardos Compliance Report

Integrating into the agency has been both a positive and at times a bit overwhelming. On both a professional and personal level it has made me more aware and conscious of my personal feelings and how this impacts on practice. Being aware of my own biases and prejudices will allow me to self-reflect to be able to make improved professional ethical decisions. Being familiar with Barnardos policies which includes safety when attending house visits by documenting where we are going in our work calendar and always letting reception know where we are, client confidentiality and exchange of information has made my learning experience at Barnardos beneficial for future practice.

Supervision occurs with two supervisors, with every second week supervision

The DEC and NAEYC codes of ethics exposed some important reminders of why I truly want to be part of a profession that place important values when considering all children, all families investing in the early childhood (EC) field and individuals willing working within this field to increase the quality care that govern our profession. I have worked within this field in various capacities that made me question the individuals I worked for and how I viewed and valued the (EC) profession. The DEC codes in particular discuss the enhancement of children’s and families quality of life when investing in child care development. Under this code #2 we should be able to identify professionals that recognize the responsibility to improve the developmental…

When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…

There are many relevant values and principles that underpin the chosen transition, one of these is using a child centred practice, for example, all practitioners must ensure the child is the priority and every decision that is made is in the child’s best interest. Practitioners must ensure that the child’s needs are put first, for example, if a child has any additional needs such as autism then all practitioners need to take this into account and ensure the correct planning and preparation is made for this, they must look how the situation may affect the child and then provide support for them, this relevant value is linked into the chosen transition as the child would have been taken into care and away for family for their own well-being and safety, every decision made is in the best interest of the child. Another value and principle that underpins the chosen transition is ensuring the welfare and safety of the child therefore practitioners must ensure that the child in question receives the correct support regarding their welfare, it must be ensured that the child feels safe and secure in their new home and also that their emotional and mental well-being is taken care of, this means providing support and ensuring that the child is coping well with the situation, to support a child the age of 7 or 8…

Furthermore, one person’s standards and opinions will be different from another’s. We cannot expect everyone to adjust to an institutionalised way of living even if they are living in their own home, hence why person centred care is so important within our job role. It is important to me as manager that the agency adapts and is flexible in its approach to each service user, not vice-versa.…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…
