Barn Swallows Video Analysis

In many cases throughout the animal kingdom females run the mating game determining who they in turn want to mate with. One example of such depicted within the video was that of Barn Swallows. Barn swallows are sleek little song birds and are common throughout most of Central America. There was a theory that female Barn Swallows chose males with darker feathers more often to father their young. This was tested by darkening male Barn Swallow feathers with a marker and keeping track determining if they really indeed mate more then others. It was proven that male Barn Swallows with darker feathers tend to breed more and as well father more young. Interestingly enough, darkening the male's feathers as well changed their body chemistry increasing …show more content…
Throughout the animal kingdom males do their best to put on a show and attract females. One in such depicted within the video that puts on an amazing show would be that of the Lyrebird. These birds hold the title for having one of the world's weirdest courtship displays. It all starts with the building of a stage, in most cases dirt piled up into small mounds. Once finished the calls then begin with up to 80% of their song list copied from other species. In many cases Lyrebird calls even fool the real species that the call originated from. Sound is exceedingly important when it comes to courtship and males of many species use sound to show dominance, alert their presence and to attract a mate. Just as important as sound in most cases is apperance. As seen in Barn Swallows, Gelada Monkeys and peacocks, females seek out males that have the best array of color or darkest feathers in this case, in hope to pass those strong genes to that of their offspring. The Lyrebirds courtship display is just a snippet to what males will do to attract a mate. Males of many different species go great lengths to attract a mate during breeding season and this video did a wonderful job in depicting that

Roly Pollie Party; How Different Types of Music Impact Pill Bugs Behavior In our experiment, my partner and I came up with the hypothesis that the vibrations of different kinds of music would affect the behavior of pill bugs. Pill bugs, also know as Roly Pollies, are small, black, terrestrial crustaceans, that roll up to protect themselves from predators. Pill bugs can't hear, but they can sense the vibrations from the sounds. This lead my partner and I to see how the vibrations from the sound would impact the behavior of the Roly Pollies.…

Many different animals develop different strategic foraging behaviours to survive the winter months. The black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) are a songbird that can be observed throughout North America and remain year round even during the cold winters (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). During the winter the chickadees form an average flock size of about six to eight, but this number can vary (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). In the flock there is a social hierarchy and the dominant individual demonstrates certain behaviours such as vocalizing, bluffs threat, chasing, displacement or fighting to state its dominance (Barkan, 1990, p. 393, Hartzler, 1970, p. 429; Odum, 1942, p. 521). Dominance in a black-capped chickadee is observed when one individual known as a subordinate submits to the dominant individual that is perceived to be more prevailing in…

We humans have something that makes us tick, we have emotions, we communicate with one another, and we learn whether it’s a school or from our mistakes or from each other, sometimes we even work in small groups to accomplish a task, even the corvids. Jonathan Kozol writes, “Entrap them in Bird Gardens,”, referencing the painting that he showed to his students, which was an, “instant favorite,” of theirs. Kozol believes that every teacher should go beyond the perceived limits of their students ' intelligence in order for them to become more worldly. I believe that this relates to establishing a chemistry with students because, in order to establish an effective chemistry with students, a teacher must build a sense of, “trust and good-natured camaraderie,” which occurs when a teacher relates to their students on an equal level, as Kozol did with Bird Gardens. When a teacher respects their students’ intelligence, chemistry is able to be made because the students do not feel inferior to the…

Due to this loss of habitat Palm Cockatoos would have to device different ways to make up for their low reproductive success (Murphy, 2003). Nest usurpation, male territorial displays at the nest and evidence of interference competition by members of the same species suggests a strong competition for nest sites depending on hollow quality and nest platform (Murphy, 2003). This shows ability to find a more durable nest is an important courtship ritual and displays such as flushing of red cheek patches and beating of the hollow might increase ability of male Palm Cockatoo to be chosen as a…
