Even though it is not directly said Ultima is the owl it is perceptible that the owl symbolizes Ultima’s soul. The owl is seen multiple times throughout the book soothing, protecting, or keeping watch over other characters in the novel. It has that sense of a positive connotation. Antonio explains how the owl alleviates his fears when he says “I realized that the owl had been with me throughout the night... Suddenly the terrible fear that had possessed me was gone,”(Anaya 23) and also when he mentions “ But not Ultima’s owl.…

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is now one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg! This field trip was a nice break from the fast-paced urban lifestyle that I have been living since moving away from home. Our excursion began at the bird-of-prey aviary. There were several types of birds at the aviary: eastern screech owls, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls, and a bald eagle, to name a few. At the aviary, I learned that barred owls are best known for a call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you……

Eight inches tall with an 18-inch wingspan. It has dark brown plumage, brown and white vertical breast streaks, and no ear-tufts with yellow orange eyes and white “glasses”. Thousands of this seemingly tame, fearless little owl migrate from Canada south through Maine to points south in winter, but some reside in the state throughout the year. Like the screech owl, it nests in tree cavities and will use a nest box. It prefers dense coniferous and broad-leaved forests next to water.…

Bosch often used owls in his works. “Blote-Obbes (1964) rightly pointed out that Bosch depicted various kinds of owl such as the little owl (The Hay Wain and so-called Prodigal Son), the long-eared owl and the townie owl (The Garden of Earthly Delights) (Marijnissev and Ruyffelaere, 465). The iconography of his owl is typically either a body-vessel with deep eyeholes, or just a head with eyes. His owls can be found in very unpredictable places.…
