Venerable, Magnificent, Exquisite, Exclusive; all words describing the harmonious Barcelona, Spain. It is a city unlike any other, with its unique heritage. The agriculture and its blissful coastline are what give Barcelona a distinctive personality. Barcelona is one of the most open and vibrant Mediterranean cities in all of Europe.

The Romans founded Barcelona in the first century B.C; the colony was named for the ruler Hamilcar Barca. The colony was originally called Barcino. In 801 Barcelona became occupied by the franks. Barcelona then became a capital of the spanish Mark. Barcelona is a key to the defense of the Swiss Franc against the Moors who occupied the rest of Spain. There were plagues, new kingdoms and monarchies, and the rise of new powers in the Mediterranean. In 1705 Philip V. of Spain designed Barcelona. The city fell Sept. 11 in 1714. This is now a national holiday. During the early 1800’s more hard times fell on Barcelona as Napoleon's troops destroyed large spans of the city because of spanish war of Independence.

In the mid 19th century there was a renewal in the Catalonia region. Barcelona becomes the most important city in all of spain. The world exhibition of 1888 was held in barcelona and was attended by over 400,000 visitors. Because the area was such an economic success there were calls for rule. In 1931 a Catalan Republic was declared in Barcelona. This was short lived as the republic failed during the civil war in 1939. By the time Barcelona hosted the olympic games in 1992, the city was once again renewed and revitalized.

Barcelona is a seaport city located only 90 miles from the southern border of France. It is located in a plain with the Besos River to the north, the Llobregat River to the south. There is a rock outcrop called Montjuich and a semi circle of mountains. Because the city is an important seaport it became heavily fortified during its history.
