Barb's Short Story: The Haunted House

The house itself appeared as if it was ready to fall down. The roof had plastic covering parts of it, and was flapping in the breeze. There was furniture on the porch, and as we got closer I noticed several cats running to get away from us. There was a terrible smell of urine and feces coming from the open door. Barb knocked and an obese man answered the door. He had no shirt on, and his jean shorts were stained. He told us to meet him in the backyard. We made our way around the several broken down vehicles, and was shocked at the garbage that was piled in the back. I don’t think there was an empty spot near the house that was not littered with garbage. In the back by a tree was this mud hole, and a huge chain which was wrapped around this dog’s neck. He was so skinny and muddy. I almost cried. …show more content…
I did not see any food bowel, but noticed a bowel of green water. The man took the chain off of him as the dog cowered to the ground. Barb called the pooch over to her and she slipped the collar around his neck. Of course the collar was a little big on him. I watched the man return to his house without looking back. He did not say anything to us, or even say goodbye to the dog. I was angry. I could not believe that someone would treat their family member like this. Lucy was spoiled. She did not sleep outside, and we would never imagine just letting someone have her. I asked Barb if I could take Duke home as a foster, and she was really happy to assist me. We took him to meet Lucy first and it was love at first site. I gave him a bath, and we fed him. There are many differences between the book The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and the 1999 film, The Haunting, directed by Jan de Bont. The main characters in the film are, Lili Taylor as the timid Eleanor Vance, Catherine Zeta-Jones as the beautiful, frisky Theodora, Owen Wilson as the deceiving Luke Sanderson, and last but not least, Liam Neeson as Dr. Marrow (Montague in the book). Many argue that this movie barely follows with the book at all. Lisa Schwarzbaum, writer for Entertainment Weekly believes that the movie is just awful. Roger Ebert, writer for the Chicago Tribune believes “The story is a mess,” but also states: “To my surprise I find myself recommending ‘The Haunting.’”…

In the short story There Will Come Soft Rains, Ray Bradbury uses literature to prove that when the human race dies out the world will take over, and no one will remember us. This story is about a futuristic house in an apocalyptic setting. The whole town is rubble and has been through a nuclear explosion. As the story progresses, we see the house go through its daily routine as if the family was still there. In his writing, Bradbury makes us realize even though life can be mundane it is better than not living at all.…

I walked up to the entrance of the evacuated home. The house could have been an enchanting two-story house; with its ivory framed windows, and front lawn. If it was not abandoned and lifeless, maybe this house would have been the dream house everyone fancied. But it's lifeless and boorish, just like the carrion of Timothy Woodsen. His body was no longer there, but the evidence was.…

Rough Draft We walked down the aisle passing by cage after cage, listening to the deafening sound of hundreds of dogs barking. Cheryl, the vintner coordinator, tried to tell us about some of the dogs, but with the amount of noise all we could do was nod and pretend like we understood. I kept my eyes open for dogs that would be fun to walk after our orientation. And out of the corner of my eye I saw a ghost of a dog.…

The sky is blue, morning blue, when the sun is just rising, at about 6 o’clock. The chilly Autumn morning made me feel safe as I peered out the dew lined window. Leaves blew across the street, yet not too many because it's early in the season. Its nice to look out, seeing the smoke come out of the chimneys from the warm homes where everyone is asleep this sunday morning. Then out of the corner of my eye, amongst the beautiful fall scenery and warm houses was a guy, creeping out the back mill door.…

Those 15 kids playing on that team became some of my bestest friends and greatest teammates to have. Most of them ended up being with me until we couldn't play khoury league anymore, and then only about 3 or 5 of them played school ball with me.…
