Barbie: The Perfect Role Model

This past March, Barbie turned the mighty age of fifty six(Walker 1). To this day, she still holds the position of being a girl’s ideal perfect body image, and the age immune doll. “In 1998 Barbie’s waist expanded and bust was made smaller to reflect a more ‘real’ body type”(Golgowski). She has been around for quite some time now; as society’s idea of a woman 's perfect body changes, Barbie’s body is constantly changing as well. In America, young girls between the ages of five to nine, have been growing up thinking that this doll was the perfect example of beauty and femininity. Young girls everywhere started to experience fashion, fantasies and aspirations just by playing with the doll. Ever since she was created, Barbie has been showing off her style trends, and fashionable looks and tips. Although there are a variety of influences, girls can choose who they want to be on their own, it is truly their decision. “My whole philosophy of Barbie was through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices”(The Barbie Story:…). Barbie had her own style, it was her choice, and she showed that. Today, she still holds the title of the most popular doll in the world. Barbie is a fashion muse and a pop culture icon for girls of all ages around the world. She seems to be very satisfied with her life as a doll, with her expensive pink car, expensive clothes, luxurious house and of course her ideal figure. She embodies what our society is asking for a women to be like. “Little girls wanted to grow up to be beautiful and have lovely clothes, just like Barbie”(Barbie-An American Icon). Girls’ and women’s self worth is dependent on themselves and the respect they have for herself. Looking at Barbie, it is very easy to have a dream like that. In reality, no woman would be able to live with her body type. Though, girls still admire her and think of her as a role model because of her style.
