Barbie Personal Statement

Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest idea to choose my career path from a Barbie book, but as a four year old, Barbie skewed what little sense of logic I had. The year is 2004, and I am immersed in Barbie: Career Girl. I spend hours perusing the colorful pages, gesturing excitedly at Barbie in each of her occupations. There is one in particular that seems to repeatedly capture my attention: Barbie is dressed in a long white coat, a black stethoscope adorns her neck. She is surrounded by jars of band-aids, soap and lollipops. She hands the patient a lollipop and cheerily pronounces them healthy. I was immediately sold. I wanted to be just like Barbie, but only because she appeared to have an infinite supply of candy. From that moment on, I was adamant about my …show more content…
Thirteen years later, I still maintain my desire to become a doctor, but for different reasons. While I haven’t lost my passion for lollipops, I’ve garnered fascination for the field of science, more specifically, cancer research. After taking biology sophomore year, I became infatuated with the study of cancer. The notion that one cell could mutate to destroy the entire human body both intrigues and disturbs me. I want to pursue the study of oncology at a college that I know has guided researchers into the complex world of cancer research, that has allowed them to create new and innovative ways to experiment on severely mutated forms of cancer and obtain millions of dollars in funding. I want to further my studies at Baylor University. At the ripe age of seventeen, there is a lot to consider when choosing a college: how big the campus is, class sizes, diversity and social statistics. While these factors are significant, one appeals to me more than the rest- research opportunities. Nowadays, everyone wants to be a doctor.
