Gaither is presumably a locally proclaimed expert on how citizens of the lower socioeconomic status should manage their finances whilst grocery shopping. Gaither is featured on the website The Onion in order to disclose inherent knowledge of why people who suffer from food insecurity are at fault for depending on the government for free handouts. Additionally, Gaither makes direct eye contact with the interviewer and exclaims “But then again, what do you expect?” While Carol Gaither is a fictional character created by an entertainment website, it is fair to assume that the majority of Americans have either shared her perspective or encountered someone that does in regards to people that qualify for government assistance programs in order to purchase their groceries.
