From the time people are born through their adulthood, they areeducated to fit in to specific roles in society. Specifically, younger females have the idea in their head that they must grow up to be perfect, beautiful women that have a main purpose to have children, and care for their homes and their husbands. The “Barbie Doll” portrays the female body through gender roles and how society feels women should appear. The Barbie doll is not just a toy, but also an icon of the perfect feminine beauty and a given role in society. This doll causes many problems for young girls today trying to fit in and obey the standards that society has for them in regards to appearance and their roles. A very good friend of my sister has just been diagnosed with an eating disorder, and she is 13 years old. I have known this girl for years, and as a child she played with Barbie dolls almost every time I saw her. After studying this issue and hearing about it in the media, I could only come to find a relation between the dolls and the eating disorder. At such a young age, it is extremely unhealthy to be living like she is. Seeing this girl being very joyful and happy as a little girl, and seeing her now is like having known two completely different people. The body image and weight of the Barbie dolls are so unhealthy, yet so beautiful looking, that it causes people to try to be just like them, which I have experienced firsthand. Seeing this girl change, and connecting the dolls with her behavior, has negatively affected me personally as well, and I am glad they are headed in the right direction and making changes with this Barbie
