January 17, 1981, in Jefferson County, Kentucky the petitioner Kevin Stanford was involved in the shooting death of a 20-year-old woman by the name of Barbel Poore, who was working as an attendant at a gas station when a heinous crime took place. Not only did Stanford kill Barbel Poore, prior to her killing, she was robbed, raped as well as sodomized by Stanford and his accomplice. According to the documents, Barbara lost her life for a mere 300 carton of cigarettes, two gallons of fuel, and a small amount of cash.
