Barbarians were always around during the time of the Greeks and consisted mostly of Germanic tribes. They were regarded as barbarians because they did not speak an ounce of Greek. They thought of them as uneducated and an un-unified entity (Strategikon). This gave us the idea that the Greeks thought highly of themselves in every aspect of human existence. They thought of themselves as the most educated and the best of the best in the world. If they did not like a certain people, then they would label them as Barbarians. They considered only good things come out of Greek and Greek alone. The best part out of all of this is that the Germanic people eventually take over the land of the Greeks even if it was just for a short time. This also showed
