To be apart of the All Iowa Honor Dance Team is the greatest honor any high school dance team member in the state of Iowa can receive. The honor team is created of 250 girls that outshined the other 500 that auditioned for a spot on the floor. Nothing is more nerve racking than only being allowed two minutes to prove to a panel of judges, without a retry. It’s not a basketball game where a time out can be called and one can try the play again, and if the play fails and the game is lost, another game is right around the corner to try again. This is one chance, one shot that you can’t change.…
With the world so serious and bombarded with constant issues, there are some things that are swept aside for many people. One of these ‘insignificant’ issues would be of the concern of dancing. In “Dance Dance Revolution” by Barbara Ehnrenreich, she describes the very background and core controversies surrounding the legalities and restrictions surrounding dance. Ehnrenreich To make her idea that dance is a persistent conflict that requires a call for action clear, she uses the contrasting times throughout history, using examples to relate to modern times, and the appellate of human empathy.…
Cinderella Ballet The cultural experience I chose to attend was the Gwinnett Ballet Company’s presentation of Cinderella. This experience was the first time I had ever been to a ballet or any kind of live play. I am the type of person who enjoys the outdoors, playing in the mud, hunting and fishing, and I am a tomboy by most people’s standards. When I was getting ready to go to the ballet, I was not sure what to expect, I felt as though I was going to be out of place.…
Since the 20th century, feminism has brought on a perspective of interpreting literature which emphasizes equality for women. In Anita’s Dance by Marian Engel, the critical feminist perspective of the writing, in my opinion, shows the struggle of how women struggle to find the respect and therefore equality of males. Showalter's approaches: the French, the American, and the female sub-text of tragedy that answer the different questions to what men see the role of women being and how this restricts the advancements and evolution of females. Then there is the 3 stages of feminism which women utilize to find the long ignored equality between the genders. Anita’s Dance is a short story which depicts the struggle of a women to break free from the stereotypical and victorian definition for the ‘role of a women’.…
A couple classes at different companies later and Michaela finally found the perfect studio, The Rock School for Dance. Along with ballet, the girls also took piano and swimming lessons, but as time passed, Michaela and Mia's dance schedule got longer and they weren't able to do the extra activities. Every December, The Rock School for Dance hosted a showcase at the Academy of Music. There, they performed a ballet routine with all the levels combined. Because of her great stage presence and level of ability, Michaela was recognized by other parents and…

For my dance report, I saw the Fall Dance at Adelphi University on December 4, 2016. It was called “Aszure Barton.” The two pieces that really stood out to me were “Tarantella” and “Consumed.” They both displayed great amounts of emotion through their choreography, backdrop, costumes, colors, music, and lighting. “Tarantella” and ‘Consumed” gave off opposite moods because of their specific components.…
Before taking this course, my knowledge of non-western influenced dance was little to none. My knowledge of dance was not very vast but I did have some knowledge, as I was a part of a Mexican folkloric dance group while in high school. However most Mexican folk dances are evident in the heavy influence that European settlers had on them.…
The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
Introduction Between 1830 and 1850 classical dance has evolved significantly from its early years in French aristocratic court life, but no other period in its history created such monumental change as the Romantic Era. Despite the brevity of this period, it created radical change and helped form ballet into what it is today. Its impact can be seen in simple changes to costuming and theatrical innovations, which made a significant and substantial impression on how the public perceived dance. These technological advances revolutionised the theatre going experience. Iconic themes that were generated by the likes of Marie Taglioni brought depth and emotion to what were previously one-dimensional storylines, along with the development of how the…
