The category of sales promotions includes a variety of marketing promotions, that are separate from any other component of the promotion mix. These types of promotions can include, but are not limited to: “coupons, contests, games, rebates, mail-in offers” (Tanner, Raymond, 2011, p. 222). In her article, Three Steps to Effective Sales Promotions, Barbara Schenck suggests that “When done correctly, promotions get customers out of a holding pattern by giving them an incentive to take action before a limited-time offer expires.” This discussion will explore three types of sales promotions tools, and subsequently, will conclude by considering the feasibility of these methods universally.

As I was sitting down to write this paper, I saw the box for our recently purchased Roomba, a robot vacuum cleaner (a pays-for-itself type of purchase if you have pets) and remembered that I had yet to register it online. Many companies, iRobot included (the makers of the Roomba), have tied the registration process to the activation of a product’s warranty; this accounts for the first incentive in going through the registration process. The second incentive came when I completed the process, which included the provision of personal marketing information including my email, phone number, and address. By providing these details along with the serial number of my product, I was rewarded for completing the registration process with two free air filters that will now be sent to my home, a value of approximately $5, perhaps more when accounting for shipping. While the dollar value of this bonus incentive is negligible to the scale of the purchase, I, like many, still view these types of small benefits as the company valuing and compensating me for my time in completing the
