• Early Life
• Barbara Kruger was born in 1945 in Newark, New Jersey in 1945. She was an only child who had a typical middle class upbringing. Both her parents worked - her mother as a legal secretary and her father as a chemical technician. As an undergraduate she obtained admission at Syracuse University where she enrolled in a number of art and design classes. After only one year at Syracuse, she moved to Parsons School of Design,New York and took more advanced art and design classes.

She highlights the ways in which our very thoughts , beliefs , attitudes and our desires are determined by sociaty’s standards and dictates. It makes us think about what exactly is sold and to whom. She has created large photomontages in her signature style of black and white photographs framed in red with thought provoking captions superimposed. Thus she has created a kind of media criticism by mixing the right image with the right copy to hook the reader. Most of her images are outdated and look like they come from the 1950’s and yet they are cunningly familiar. She thus is coercing the self consciousness of her viewer while keeping him informed and entertained at the same
