Barangaroo is an ongoing urban renewal project on a former container wharf on the western harbour foreshore of the Sydney CBD. It is 22 hectares in size and will cost roughly $6 billion in order to recreate and redefine the entirety of the western edge of Sydney’s Harbour. It will provide over 11 hectares that will be able to be accessed by the public and community. This site will also provide over 24,000 permanent jobs and generate around $2 billion per annum to the NSW economy. It is owned by the NSW Government but the project is managed by the Barangaroo Delivery Authority. It will provide space for outdoor recreational activities (such as yoga, cycling, etc.), celebration (major musical events, etc. could be held here) and community (a place where people can come together). There will be an abundance of bush walks, grassed areas, lookouts over the harbour, walking and cycling paths, rock pools and a new harbour cove. There will be the creation of a new cultural centre that will provide 18,000 square metres for potential public recreational uses and an underground car park (with enough space for 300 cars). It also had amazing views of the harbour, it was a very large amount of free space (allowing many different development opportunities and ideas) and the area has a large amount of cultural significance making it far more desirable to redevelopers. Barangaroo is an opportunity to reinvigorate Sydney's position as a financial services hub in the Asia Pacific by generating jobs, boosting the economy and creating a new place to live, work and visit and overall reaffirming Sydney’s standing as a global city.
What are the effects of it being there?
It will bring far more activity into the area due to the amount of people newly living, working and visiting there. This will encourage improvements in public transport in the area and a boost in the use of ferry’s, etc. in the area. It will also create roughly 24,000 permanent jobs that will help to lower unemployment rates and boost Sydney’s overall economy. It will also improve the entirety of Sydney’s carbon footprint
