Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Barack Obama, Sr., left his family to attend Harvard University. After Harvard, he returned to Kenya where he died due to a car accident. His mother, Ann Dunham moved to Indonesia to do field research. Obama mother sent him to live with her parents in Hawaii because she was concerned about his education. He attended Hawaii's prestigious Punahou School from fifth grade until he graduated from high school. After graduating from high school, President Obama enrolled into Occidental College in Los Angeles. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City after his sophomore year. At Harvard law school Obama was a standout student, served as president of Harvard law review. Barack Obama was the first African-American to serve as the president of the law review. Barack returned to Chicago in the summer for an internship at Sidley and Austin law firm where he met his wife Michelle Patterson, a Chicago native and Princeton and Harvard graduate. Michelle was his supervisor at the firm and after a four-year of dating, they married in 1992. Obama implemented Illinois project vote, a voter registration drive aimed to increase black turnout in the 1992 election. He then took a position as an attorney at civil rights firm and a professor at the University of Chicago Law school. In 1996, he ran for his first political position in office as the state senator from Chicago. Obama announced his candidacy to replace the current state senator, Alice Palmer, with her support. After she failed attempt to be in congress she tried to be re-elected as the state senator. Obama did not withdraw his campaign he fought and defeated Palmer.
