July1,2015 Banning Smoking on Ohio University’s Campus
Ohio University president, Roderick McDavis (2015) stated that “We will join more than 1,000 campuses nationwide who ban the use of tobacco on their campuses,”(Lee). Banning smoking will help make the campus area healthy by encouraging the smokers to quit smoking, Ohio University decided to ban smoking on any campus property. The University campus will begin the Smoke and Tobacco-Free Initiative policy in August 2015. The policy will impose by using "a community model” (Hill, 2015). Quitting smoking often takes several attempts and people who are trying to reduce or quit smoking usually face many problems. In fact, the nicotine in tobacco is extremely addictive, which causes many people to fail in their attempts at quitting. The majority of smokers who want to quit smoking need assistance and care. Attempting to make them quit cold turkey is simply not going to work in the long run. In order to help smokers make the transition into the new policy, Ohio University should create several campaigns and resources for those who are looking to quit. Examples of these programs could be free nicotine patches in Baker Center, or a weekly support group for those attempting to quit cold turkey. An average smoker may not have enough support or the strategy to break the links between them and tobacco. A smoker will need resources for when they are craving a cigarette, or real stories of people who are trying to quit smoking for support more than offering cessation classes. By encouraging this support, the smoker will develop steps to replace the bad habit of smoking, and will find resources to make their bodies …show more content…
There are lots of visitors who visit the University for different events, but if they cannot smoke, they may not come. Even if they decide to attend, they may not be comfortable and leave early. For the first two years of school at Ohio University, students are required to live on campus in dorms, but if they smoke, they may choose to attend school elsewhere. Also, if they may decide to live off campus when they are able to, instead if in the dorms, which will cost the University money. However, the policy could be modified to create a special smoking room in each dorm or area. Many students may also transfer to another university as a result of The Smoke and Tobacco-Free Initiative policy. Many may actually, be international students. My friend’s brother from Saudi Arabia is considering transferring because of the new policy. He believes that he may lose his control, and be unable to focus on his classes. So, Ohio University should think about their income before they decide to enact this policy in
