Marijuana: But Why? How many people smoke marijuana? Marijuana—also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves and flowers of Cannabis sativa—the hemp plant, which people will mainly smoke to get a “high”. A survey that was taken in 2015 showed that at least 50 percent of Americans aged 12 and up have tried marijuana at least once (Pewresearch). People smoke marijuana for a number of different reasons as well. No matter what reason marijuana is illegal in most states, and should stay illegal in all circumstances. There is a big problem with people driving under the influence. When people smoke marijuana, they get high and they are unable to make decisions with a clear mind. When said people don’t have a clear mind, they can make the decision to drive. Driving while high is still considered driving under the influence (DUI). One thing that gets affected when people drive while high is that the person will actually overestimate how impaired they are. They will drive slower than the other drivers, and they will have an increased distance from the person in front of them.
