Banning Furaternities On College Campuses

Despite the negative attention that college fraternities have received, Greek life is a very important and rewarding part of the college experience. Banning fraternities on college campuses could possibly lead to a higher risk of negative actions than were committed prior. Fraternities provide a home away from home for many young men (and women seeing how many sororities are technically considered fraternities) and guidance throughout the college years. Disassembling fraternities would lead to a stunt in the emotional growth and hinder the ability for many young Americans to better themselves and grow as an individual. While many who do not understand the community associate fraternities with drinking, partying, and hazing (which leads to the topic of sexual misbehavior) this side of Greek life is the only side that is being shown through the media. If others were able to see and really understands what a fraternity is about they would understand that the majority of the organization is positive. While there are some negatives to having these communities on campuses, the benefits outweigh the negative occurrences greatly. Yes, it is unfortunate that sexual misbehavior towards women does occur; however, it is not just present in the fraternities. Many of the fraternity men that I have had the chance to interact with are some of the sweetest guys there are and they would not even hurt a butterfly. To assume just because a group of men are gathered together there will be partying, drinking, and misbehaving occurring is a hasty generalization that should not be taken seriously. While there again, are those who do participate in these negative actions, it is not fair to ban every single fraternity due to the occurrence that happened at one school, in one group, by one
