Books can be challenged or banned at anytime when it is in a school’s library if a teacher, student, parent, or administrator thinks it is explicit or offensive in any way. Books get banned because of offensive language, sexually explicit, and unsuited to any age group. The Roman Catholic church began the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1559 which is a list of all the notorious banned books. Plato was the first to talk about the idea of banning books in 360 B.C., he said that we should get rid of any books that were unsatisfactory. The only way that people have dealt with getting rid of books that seem to be a harm to society is just banning them and taking them off the shelves.

Depending on what grade level a student is in they should be reading the classics in literature and also the creative writing that many authors seem to do so well. Parents are usually the ones who try to bring a stop to their student reading such mature leveled literature that they think has content that is very intense for the student. Before a librarian or even a teacher can order a book they do have to get it approved by an administrator which means they would have to take time out of their day to read the content of the book and make sure it is school appropriate. There is also the school board committee that has to decide if the book is appropriate for the students to be able to read. If they think the book has too much intense content for the students it will not be approved and it cannot be ordered. Many books do not get approved because there seems to always be one person who feels like the content of the book is too offensive for students to be able to read. When this happens the first amendment gets overlooked because the school board has to make sure that they are not giving out inappropriate materials to their students. Book censorship has always been a problem and it will continue to be a problem because many people think certain materials are too offensive for people to be able to read and others fight for the first amendment in that case. People will always fight to keep something on the shelves that they think the population should be able to read because it might have useful information that everyone needs to know or they want to be able to exercise their freedom of

There was never a real start to banning books, people were always trying to get rid of “harmful books”, and up until the invention of the printing press in 1450, the only thing you needed to do to ban a book was burn it. For a book to be banned, it has to first be challenged and then proven unfit for what kind of person would be reading it. The reasons for ban include sexual situations or dialog, profanity, encouragement of "damaging" lifestyles, violence or negativity, racial issues, books that include magic or witchcraft themes, such as Harry Potter, religious affiliations, and political bias. Parents argue that they know their children better and that their child’s education follows the parent’s choices, which is true, but that doesn’t mean that you should be banning books for no reason.…

The burning of books by Jewish authors in Nazi Germany, the rejection of books on evolution and science by religious conservatives, and the removal of Green Eggs and Ham from the country of China are well known examples of book banning. Controversy over censorship has existed for as long as authors have written books. As early as 360 B.C., Plato wrote of censoring the writings of others. Several religious and political groups, as well as parent groups, assert that books they deem offensive should be banned and that they should designate what is made available for children to read. Those who champion First Amendment rights would challenge that books should never be banned because books, no matter their content, allow intellectual freedom…

The banning and challenging of a book is typically decided by parents, school staff, and district officials. For a book to be challenged it has to be attempted to be removed or restricted. It is, again, based upon the objections or parents and school officials. Unlike a challenge a banning of a book is the removal of material that is getting challenged. Most of the time challenges and banning’s are motivated by the desire to protect the children from what people think may be inappropriate content, typically sexual or against a religion or sometimes because it promotes a certain religion.…

In fact, Mark Twain, a great American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer does not think that books should be censored: “Censorship is telling a man he can’t have a steak just because a baby can’t chew it.” This shows that censoring a book is similar in this hypothetical by telling a person they can not read a book because other people can not handle to. This portrays that censoring books is blown out of proportion because one person might not be able to manage the maturity it takes to read the book, but it does not mean it should be banned for everyone else to be allowed to read it. The same idea is also represented by Oscar Wilde, author of The Picture of Dorian Gray, when he articulates that, “The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame.” This shows that when the world censors a book, it goes to show that they are to be put to shame for taking away ideas and morals into the world for it’s learning.…

Classic works such as To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Maya Angelou) have been under fire for many years. They have been accused of containing “...obscene, heretical, or subversive elements” (Donelson “The Students’ Right to Read”). Granted, some may be offensive subjects but we must learn about what's happened in order to set a precedent on what we can do in the future. Censorship on books only denies us progress. Attempts at banning books addresses only the emotional and mental aspect of the problem, not the educational…

I remember when I first started reading the books on my grades reading level when I was in the 2nd grade. Although most of the other students were reading with no problem, I became bored with reading the those younger level books and searched for books that were much more interesting. My mom talked to my teachers as they formed ideas of the books that would grab my attention better. I then learned that not every student was on the same reading level as each other, regardless of the grade they are in, reading higher level books are more interesting and grab my attention better.…

The reason books are banned ranges greatly; and the people who do the banning are even more numerous. Some examples of reasons books are banned are that they contained graphic language, were too violent, encouraged homosexuality, and even more common was that they conflicted the values of the communist. A book I read and did a project on in middle school was banned by the Nazi Germany. That book was The Call of the Wild by Jack London and was written in 1903. It was banned because it was considered "too radical.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
