In the book, George and everybody else treated Lennie differently only because of his mental difficulties. When you are reading the middle of the book it is clear the George did not plan on taking care of Lennie and having Lennie travel with him. On page 40, George tells Slim “Used to play jokes on him because he was too dumb to care for himself.” Also, George said “Good boy. That's swell. You say that over two, three times so you are sure won’t forget it.” What those two quotes are telling you is that Lennie is treated differently because of his mental difficulties but in our world we know if they are disabled or not. At the near end of the book, it describes the shot that rolled up the hills. When you are reading towards the end of the book it clearly shows how George tried to kill Lennie in the most least suffering way possible. However, On page 106, “The crash rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he laid there without quivering.” Also on page 107, “Slim cam directly to George and sat down next to him, sat very close to him “Never you mind,” Said Slim “A got to go sometimes.” When you read those quotes it doesn't describe and blood, shaking of Lennie or anything else of that manner.
