Banned Books

I had no prior knowledge of what banned or challenged books were. After doing some research and some independent thinking, I have gained new knowledge of this subject. The difference between banned books and challenged books is that a challenge book is an attempt to remove or restrict materials based upon the objections of a person or group. A banned book is the removal those materials. The two books that are banned that I found interesting was “Persepolis”, by Marjane Satrapi and “It’s Perfectly Normal”, by Robie Harris. The reason for “Persepolis being banned is because gambling and offensive language. I can see this being a problem because the offensive language can offend people and parents. The reason for “It’s Perfectly Normal” being banned is because of sex education, unsuited for age group and nudity. I can also see this as a problem for parents because I know that some parents do not want their child to learn about sex or see anything that has to do with sex at a young age. This article talks about why we banned books and why it’s a current issue in today’s society. In my opinion I think that banning books is a way for people to speak their voice. I can agree that some parents may not want their child to read a book that has sex education in it, but in this case parents should always read and know what their child is going to read. Some parents actually might want a book that is about sex education, and so we can’t just banned books because of how one feels about it. In our textbook on page 134 it talks about how important books are and that students can get most of their learning from reading books. So, if we banned books because we feel like it not appropriate for students to read it, they are going to learn about it eventually so why not learn it from a children’s book and have to child be able to ask the teacher
