Banksy Research Paper

Banksy, an unknown English street artist, believed to be born in Bristol around 1974, rose to prominence for his controversial stencil works in the late 90’s. His career began as a small graffiti artist apart of a street art gang ‘DryBreadZ Crew’. By the late 90’s his stencil works began to become more widely recognized in many different parts of England. Banksy spent years developing a very unique style which usually consisted of striking imagery and deep political meanings. The works were celebrated worldwide as some of the best and most famous street art. Despite being adored by many, Banksy has sparked much controversy from his art. One of his most controversial pieces, upsetting many animal rights activists, consisted of a live elephant painted with an old Victorian type wallpaper pattern. …show more content…
A key component of Banksy’s works creating controversy, is his use of copyrighted subjects and appropriations of well known images. This use of famous imagery can be seen in water lilies, painted by Monet but adapted by Banksy to included visible pieces of rubbish and waste in the water. Banksy is now a household name known worldwide, this has completely transformed his small acts of vandalism into expensive and collectable artworks. To this day Banksy’s identity remains unknown, refusing to be interviewed.
