Overview Bank of the West is a financial institution located in the west side of the United States. In the state of New Mexico there are about 20 branches and about 15 of them are located in Albuquerque. The financial institution has about 10,000 employees as a whole, however, the paper focuses on a branch with 11 employees. This particular branch is going through a rough time due new employees and a lack of motivation. About three months have passed since the last major turnover. With this in mind, there are 11 employees with different roles and very unique personalities. Each employee has a specific role with specific duties in order for the branch to work cohesively. This case demonstrates that there are factors in the bank that are affecting the motivation of the staff. There are two general categories that researchers have proposed when it comes to motivation theory; content and process theories. These theories explain the psychological processes underlying employee motivation. The content theories of motivation focus on the person and internal factors while the process theories focus on explaining the process by which internal factors and cognitions influence employee motivation. For this case it seems that content theory might be the cause for some of the turmoil within the bank. More specifically “McClelland’s Need Theory” can be used to understand the motivational problems within this case.
Introduction
This case will evaluate motivation factors within a Bank of the West branch using McClelland’s Need Theory. David McClelland explains the relationship between needs and behavior. This content theory will be used to evaluate and explain how changes in management, led to impacts in employee motivation within the branch. In addition to McClelland’s theory, the lack of a strategic plan to guide the decisions by the bank will be assessed and how it impacts motivation.
