I never asked for any of this. I left friends and my family behind to start a new life, an opportunity for education that I did not have in my hometown of Bani in the Dominican Republic. I was still in shock, preparing myself mentally while my sister put her coat on before getting on the bus. When we arrived in William H. I thought that I would not survive that day because everything was so foreign; this was more than first

The way Arundhati writes is very sophisticated and descriptive. She use a lot of large vocabulary. Some of the words she uses I had to goole to be able to understand what she was trying to say. For example the first sentence in the book she says “May in Ayemenem is a hot, brooding month. ” I had no idea what brooding month until I looked it up and found that is meant showing deep unhappiness.…

It’s a sunny day and life was good. It was a normal school day. At the time I was only four and I was honestly so excited to go to school and see my best friend. As soon as the car stopped I jumped out and I ran as fast as my little legs can go. I barged into my classroom expecting to see my best friend, but there was a dead silence, something was wrong.…

As we waited outside to be called inside the classroom, my heart pounded. I wiped my hands on my pants in an attempt to get them to stop sweating. Finally, being called we walked into the classroom. Automatically my mind was racing all over the place, I walked past all those teachers and headed to the front. I looked around and all eyes were on me and the seven other Dreamers.…

I could feel my ears get warm. My face burned, I cupped my hands to try and relax my body, since it was so rigid from the words that froze me to my chair. Had my teacher really just told me I wasn't going to be able to go to college because I was an Immigrant? “ I don’t mean it in the wrong way Daisy, but to get into college that’s a really big step to do. I just don’t think you're gonna be able to afford it”, she said with seriousness.…

I remember feeling the pressure of time and remembering what Ms. Chapparo had told me, that it was a very competitive program to get into. Having all that in mind made me think that I didn’t have what it took. In other words, I thought I didn’t have an extremely sad story of obstacles to tell. When in reality everyone had their own unique story to tell, including myself. When I would show up to mandatory tutoring every day after school Ms. Chapparo would ask me “Are you working on your application”?…

Prologue I breathed in the pink eraser of my pencil and immediately felt my face frozen as my thoughts was blank. I had no idea what to write about my family history since I had not known my father for years and my mother was very difficult to comprehend. The bus ride of noisy classmates made it hard to think of anything positive about my life as the heavy weight, large bus driver hit every bump or pothole in broken concrete roads. There is one thing I hate most than being named after a coin, divorce parents in high school, is being an heir to a group of witches.…

Much like every kid, I grew up learning how to count to ten, tie my shoes, and ride a bicycle. Little did I know that the patience and persistence it took to accomplish these things would help me do so many things in life when I got older. I learned at a very young age that things happen that make no sense at times and some still seem unclear. A few events in my life have made me who I am and shaped my identity into what it is. It was a normal day in fourth grade that quickly turned into a nightmare.…

I can remember it like it was just an hour ago, the time the plane landed in New York. It was a late afternoon and it was chilly. I remember immediately falling more in love with my mother because she had insisted vehemently that we wrap ourselves up in layers because she predicted that it would be cold. Even though these memories are so vivid, it feels like it was a thousand years ago. So much had happened since that first day in the United States three years ago.…
