From Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to Mary Had a Little Lamb, everyone has been exposed to music from a young age. In fact, some people pursue a musical career from the early exposure and influence. They find a need to be musically inclined, but don’t know how to be. Therefore, the perfect option is being in a concert band or orchestra. Band and orchestra are similar in the ways that both contain instruments, both produce music, and both have conductors. However, they are different with the type of instruments played, performances, and the way the sounds are produced. Band and orchestra are similar yet different. Band and orchestra both contain many instruments. When people typically think of orchestra, they think of the violins, violas, cellos, and basses; however, in a full orchestra there are band instruments that are combined with the orchestra to produce the most qualitative sound. There are arrangements that allow band pieces to be performed in orchestra, and orchestra pieces to be performed in band. For example, Eric Whitacre’s October can be performed in a traditional orchestra setting, or it can be performed in a small band ensemble. The composer has arranged the music for it to be performed with different instruments and in a different setting. Lastly, orchestra and band are similar in the fact that both have conductors. Whether it is in fifth grade or it is in college, there will always be conductors conducting the tempo of the music. A conductor is important because when they move their hands in a certain way, it tells the musicians where the beats are and what beat they are on.
