Thank you for the scholarship. I am Mandy Schreiner and I go to JL Mann High School. I’m in 10th grade and take all honors and one AP class. I play flute in the school band and outside of school in marching band, I take Spanish 4 Honors. My favorite class is band and my least favorite is Engineering. I like to listen to music and hang out with friends in my freetime I like to cook when I can and practice cello and flute. I also enjoy playing cymbals in winter percussion. I don’t like doing homework or studying, but I have to do homework. I want to become a doctor or an engineer in the future, but continue playing my instruments.

Last year I used the money for many things. I was able to buy my cello which allowed me to continue to playing, to practice, and to continue improving my skills. I also went to private lessons

This year I played with the Mann Band after school twice a week and I enjoyed it because I could play with my close friends and march to create this beautiful show. The money made it possible for me to pay the dues for marching band and the cost for a pair of marching shoes.Mann Band is the high school band for JL Mann and while it’s mostly high schoolers there are some especially talented middle schoolers. We are expected to practice on our own time and have it ready for the weekly rehearsals. I played and marched in several shows throughout the fall marching season. I also participated in the concert band, which is all the band students and we play higher difficulty music. It’s different because not all band students are in marching band and the woodwinds are given a more important role in the music. Also I was able to join creative writing club as one of the founding members. We meet once every two weeks and do

I joined the Chorus and the Vocal Ensemble at the high school and continued to try and better myself as a musician. My music department also offered me other musical opportunities such as festivals. I have attended several festivals such as the Lakes Region music festival and the All New England music festival. These festivals allowed me to come together with other students from different schools that loved singing and performing as much as I did. Every time I perform at one of these festivals I am overwhelmed by how beautiful music can be when everyone I am working with is just as passionate as I am about the work we are doing and also extremely talented.…

However, I knew that I had made a commitment and had to stick to it whether I liked it or not. This also taught me how to work as a team and the importance of being a part of something like that. Also, I have been involved in band all throughout middle and high school, as well as choir when I could fit it into my schedule. Band has taught me so many things, once again how to work as a team. Especially through marching band season, we all have to learn to work together and individually improve for the greater good of the whole band.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

Throughout childhood, people try and find where they fit in, where they belong. I desperately tried to find my place by throwing myself into multiple activities, from sports to musical groups. I liked the majority of them, but nothing was as enjoyable as marching band. The image I have chosen is my marching band’s practice field. We like to call it our “dirt mound” due to the lack of flat ground, dying grass, and dirt ditches from the years of band camp.…

Girl in a Band Book Review “When we came out onstage for our last show, the night was all about the boys” (Kim Gordon). This is the bold first sentence that Sonic Youth vocalist/bassist Kim Althea Gordon writes in her autobiographical memoir, Girl in a Band. The inspiration behind this liberating title is from “Sacred Trickster,” an ode to the quartet’s early 1990s high-gloss hardcore phase that appears on Sonic Youth’s final album, The Eternal. The entirety of this memoir is told from the altruistic world of Kim Gordon’s mind and tangible experiences. This novel focuses on youth-to-adult transition, feminine perceptions in the 70s/80s, separation from a longtime spouse, and the predevelopment of diagnosing schizophrenia as well as its effects on a family.…
