French film director and critic Jean-Luc Godard was born on December 3rd, 1930 to wealthy parents from Protestant families of Franco-Swiss Descent. According to Monaco (1976), ?Arthur, Franz, and Odile, three superannuated students, have decided to commit a robbery, but they are motivated not so much by thought of gain as by that particular brand of ennui that leads so many of Godard?s characters to try to reformulate their lives in terms of cinematic fiction? (p. 142). Odile is a na?ve girl that we are introduced to in Franz and Arthur?s English class. Then Franz, a somewhat socially awkward dreamer who aspires to be a driver at Indianapolis and is in love with Odile but doesn?t know how to express it to her. In addition, Monaco (1976) states how Franz did not know if the world was a dream or whether the dream was the world. And finally there?s Arthur, the alpha of the three main characters. He knows exactly what to say to Odile to make her agree to the robbery. He is very stern and violent at times.
