Band Night

As a student studying Short Film Production, I soon realised that it was completely different to the experience on the module during my first year of University. The learning curve was far more expansive. I learned how to appreciate the various roles within a production, I learnt that even if a role that may seem small in comparison to the DOP or Director that they still play a significant part in the overall production. It requires a team of individuals to be fully coherent with one another to create a mesmerising moving image. At the start of this module I thought that it would be a case of creating a basic short film to understand the concept of production. I was wrong, it taught me the values of clear communication between cast and crew, …show more content…
Band Night was the title for the movie we would be producing. With 5 key members of crew, it required a couple of individuals to double up on roles. My role was Sound Design. I was responsible for the creation of a Soundtrack as well as the mixing of sound and the recording on the day of filming. During the Production Process the group meet several times discussing ideas, discussing their thoughts on location, set design, lighting. Several various locations throughout the Bath where suggested and Burdell’s Yard was the location I suggested and had a preference towards. It provided a rustic atmosphere to the set with old brick decorating the building. After a long drawn out process of the Producer and Director communicating with the Location Manager of Burdells Yard we received permission to film at this location. Having been part of the Location Scouting, it opened my eyes to understanding the impact the right location can play a part in a production. As without the location the film will cease to exist, it will cease to provide the impact that you as a film creator wants to provide to the audience.
Prior to these meetings, I thought that the production process was going to be far more simplistic, instead I underestimated the time it was going to take to flesh out the idea and make it flourish. Hours upon hours where set behind our laptop screens, in person bouncing off of each other’s ideas trying to understand

Throughout the course of this semester, taking TCF 201 has taught me about, even though I come to the conclusion that going in this direction of actually being a filmmaker is not for me, in the end. However, it did teach me a great deal. I never knew how much work could go into producing and directing your own work, I mean I had a general idea, but nothing to this magnitude of the amount of work that it takes, plus the hours of sleep that I have lost took a toll on me as well. But it was all worth it.…

‘Just one hour of this and you can go back to sleep’ was the phrase I groggily repeated to myself as I got ready to register for my freshman year of high school. Had I known that the mountain of paperwork I was about to fill out that late July morning would ultimately lead to me finding my passion, I would have definitely been a lot more enthusiastic. I traded all my information for my schedule, only to realize that there was one slight problem: P.E. was on my list of courses for the year. Physical education? I sought out my counselor immediately to fix this quandary.…

While reading Dianne’s page and looking at the question I see that there is a lot to learn when it comes to storytelling. You don’t just plot it right away, there’s a step to take; main one is to brainstorm your ideas before going to the next step. Here is the outline of what she gave, “Identifying the conflict, learning about the characters, considering the setting, and deciding on the form of a story”. (Rees, 2010). Reading further to where she talks about the effectiveness of the training, which inquires, “rising action, climax, resolution”.…

Films are products of their time and evolve as American culture evolves. As such, directorial use of existing technology, and the cultural desire for improved movie-making have led to the development of the motion picture industry. “To most people, a movie is popular entertainment, a product to be produced and marketed by a large commercial studio. Regardless of the subject matter, this movie is pretty to look at – every image is well polished by an army of skilled artists and technicians” (Barsam & Monahan, 2016, p.3).…

Roger Spottiswoodes’ powerful film And the Band Played On is one that delves into the serious issues of its time regarding a new, unknown disease, which is eventually labeled as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The film was successful in suppressing the stereotype that AIDS is strictly a gay man’s disease by presenting a new “truth about AIDS.” Through the use of scientific evidence and extensive research, the film was able to prove that AIDS is a disease which can be transmitted through blood transfusions and IV drug use. As an epidemic was quickly spreading among gay men in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City, scientists and doctors from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) worked together in hopes of uncovering the cause of this mysterious illness, later identified as AIDS. Assumptions within the biomedical model are exhibited consistently throughout the film when the…

The most important thing I learned was as a Producer you need to be prepared for anything and everything. No matter how much pre-production is done for a project something will happen and will throw off the schedule. You need to know exactly what you want and how it will work with whatever the situation or question will be.…

The course AFAS 160 D1 is my first online class, and until now I still felt lucky to choose this class as one of my general education classes, because it gave me a great opportunity and an eye-opening experience about learning the African American Culture which I have never learned before and also gave me a chance to learn online. Describing this course to someone else, I would say this class is interesting and if you want to learn this class well, you need to prepare the Voice Thread and read the book carefully. To be honest, making videos on Voice Thread gave me a unique experience. I still remembered the first time I made a video on Voice Thread how nervous I was, I was afraid to have different ideas with other students and worried if they disagreed with me what should I do?…

My group decided to use our two-day workshop to address two aspects of identity that we collectively felt were objectively important and interesting to explore with our group of attendees, race and gender/sexuality. We felt that the workshop should be open to anyone who wishes to attend, but we will be advertising it on college campuses to students as well as faculty. The topic seems daunting at first glance; the idea that attending this workshop would mean understanding all aspects of race and gender/sexuality is intimidating, so we kept this in mind when designing our workshop. In order to make this workshop marketable to anyone we designed it with some key factors in mind.…
