Marching Band Benefits

Conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a 2014 survey shows that there are only about 173,300 available musician occupations in the United States (“Musicians and Singers”). Meanwhile, there are about 35,000 high schools in the country with bands ranging from 20 to 400 members (“High School”). This difference in numbers does not constitute the amount of musicians there are in the nation, let alone the world. Many musically inclined individuals begin to prosper in high school band, which then leads to the overall passion for music. Aside from this passion, being involved in such programs has additional benefits to the musician. However, playing an instrument requires an enormous about of breath control and air circulation. This is healthy preparation for any other physical activity in the future. In marching band, a student can sometimes exert more physical energy than other sports in high school, such as tennis and golf. It is expected for a marcher to play an instrument while moving across a football field multiple times during an eight minute show. This automatic exercise also requires breath control to deliver the best sounding performance from the band (“March On!”). Marching bands have mandatory band camps, after-school rehearsals, football games, and competitions that all demand members to expend an abundance of physical labor. There are numerous social advantages that are taught in the high school music department, and many of these are successful characteristics. Team building, the most prominent of these traits, is taught in all bands, including symphonic. A musician is one individual who helps to make up an entire sound that the band performs. Therefore, understanding that team building is important is crucial to a successful band. Other social benefits that music demonstrates is discipline and dedication, which is a meaningful aspect to marching band (“March On!”). A marcher must remain in form and listen to the leaders of the ensemble. This skill benefits members in any future job that expects an employee to remain disciplined and dedicated.
