Band Camp Reflection

Good Essays
During high school I participated in many different extracurricular activities. Being involved in the marching band was one of the most rewarding experiences I had in high school. I wasn't a part of the band, but the color guard. When I first started color guard, I asked myself why I would dedicate the last two weeks of summer to twirling a flag. By the end of the first week of band camp I realized this is what I wanted to do in high school.
Band camp was long, arduous, and sweaty. I devoted more than a hundred hours over the first two weeks to learn the show. Those hours didn't include countless extra spent helping others and practicing alone. All the hard work everyone put in during rehearsals and band camp would pay off at every performance.

Failing at something you’re passionate about can be devastating. This happened to me my senior year of high school. I had just moved back to my hometown that summer, and after one year at a school where I knew no one and another year homeschooled, I was ready to get back to a familiar place. I was looking forward to one high school activity in particular: marching band. I had practiced some throughout the summer, assuming that a year off from band wouldn’t make an outstanding difference in my performance.…

From sixth to eighth grade I was shy and nervous to play in front of anyone besides playing as a group. During my ninth year, now in high school, I got new band instructors, new difficulty in music, and the larger version of the tuba. I felt that I was beginning to feel more courageous and decided to join Solo Ensemble. Solo Ensemble is a time of year where you or a small group of instruments can compete in a music competition. It would be like a divisional tournament for basketball.…

Thank you so much!” I said bawling my eyes out. It was a dream come true! I counted down the days until the concert and each day felt like a month. All that was on my mind during school was All Time Low and Warped Tour. Throughout the school year, I saved my money for band merchandise and tried to get myself mentally and physically prepared for the concert.…

When I first joined the band I had been playing tuba for around four years and I felt fairly confident in my playing abilities. The first time when I played with the seniors though my reality was shattered. They were all so much better than me and I believed that I would never reach their level. My high school band director on the other hand saw potential in me and gave me lessons to become better. By the end of my sophomore year I was first chair in the top band at our school and I knew that music was a passion that I wanted to pursue.…

It was the first week of second year and I’ve never been so excited to be in school as that day. I’ve fell in love with music the moment I saw the bass guitar. For a weeks I’d walk in to the class and just play around with it until people would tell me to stop because I was making too much noise. I remember the first riff I have ever learned…

At first, this was discouraging and I found myself contemplating the idea that maybe I wasn’t a leader but just two weeks later I was invited to join Phi Theta Kappa National Community College Honors Society! It didn’t take long for me to realize that high school simply wasn’t the right environment for me because everything they told me I wasn’t capable of, I thrived in at the college! I have held active membership for over a year at Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association. For my junior years of high school and 2nd year of college, I was part of a delegation that represented the school at the National Model United Nations in New York City! Community service was never a requirement at my high school, however after my summer internship at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, I realized just how important it was.…

As a result of continuous practice and persistence, I became the principal player in my freshman band. Before entering high school band, notwithstanding the effort, I faced financial challenges. My family could not afford a trombone or pay for band to let me continue my dreams. But I did not surrender hope, and asked my band teacher for help while my parents sought aids from my relatives. Fortunately, I could purchase a student model instrument at a cheap price and continue to play in high school.…

Also having lessons made it possible for me to find about summer camps and other orchestras. This year I played with the Mann Band after school twice a week and I enjoyed it because I could play with my close friends and march to create this beautiful show. The money made it possible for me to pay the dues for marching band and the cost for a pair of marching shoes.Mann Band is the high school band for JL Mann and while it’s mostly high schoolers there are some especially talented middle schoolers. We are expected to practice on our own time and have it ready for the weekly rehearsals. I played and marched in several shows throughout the fall marching season.…
